Game Description

From my own experience of playing this game and the use of resources all over the internet including xbox.com and xbox360achievements.org, I've come up with the most efficient way to earn the 38 possible achievements for Half-Life 2. I said "possible" because you can get some of them on Episode 1 or 2. You should also note, if you started HL2 for the very first time, you will not see secret achievements listed and the list will not show 38. If you're stuck on getting though Half-Life 2 levels, you can go to nextgenwalkthroughs.com for their Half-Life 2 videos.

Here's a list of the chapters in Half-Life 2: Point - Insertion, A Red Letter Day, Route Kanal, Water Hazard, Black Mesa East, We Don't Go To Ravenholm, Highway 17, Sandtraps, Nova Prospekt, Entanglement, Anticitizen One, Follow Freeman, Our Benefactors, and Dark Energy.

	Submissive (Secret achievement)
	Put the can in the trash

At the beginning of the game after talking to Barney you will meet a combine soldier who knocks a can on the ground and asks you to pick it up and place it in the trash. Comply.

	Defiant (Secret achievement)
	Hit the trashcan cop with the can.

Instead of placing the can in the trash, throw it at the soldier. You'll have to reload your save.

	Malcontent
	Escape the apartment block raid.

This is story related so you can't miss it.

	What cat?
	Break the mini-teleporter in Kleiner's lab.

When you first enter Kleiner's lab you will see a mini-teleporter on the left with a plant in it. Continually use this teleporter on the plant until it breaks after which the achievement will unlock.

	Trusty Hardware
	Get the crowbar.

When you recieve the Crowbar this will unlock. You can also get this in Episode 1 or 2.

	Barnacle Bowling
	Kill five barnacles with one barrel.

The best place to do this is in Route Kanal. After playing the level for a while you will arrive to an area where there will be many barnacles and two explosive barrels. Shoot a barrel to set it on fire and make it roll down the path. A barnacle will grab it and haul it up and when it explodes, it will kill several of them at once and the achievement will unlock.

	Anchor's Aweigh
	Get the airboat.

This is story related and you will get it when you enter the airboat at end of Route Kanal.

	Heavy Weapons
	Get the airboat's mounted gun.

This is story related so you won't miss this. You'll get this in Water Hazzard.

	Revenge!
	Destroy the hunter-chopper in Half-Life 2.

At the end of Water Hazard, you will have to defeat the chopper thats been harrassing you all through the level. Destroy it to unlock the achievement.

	Vorticough
	Discover the hidden singing vortigaunt cave in chapter Water Hazard.

After destroying the chopper, open the gate and head right then a make quick left. There you will see two vents. Park the boat next to the left vent and use the boat to help you climb into it. Follow the tunnel and you will find the vortigaunt. Here is a link to a video showing how this is done.

	Zero-Point Energy
	Get the Gravity Gun in Black Mesa East.

This is story related so you can't miss it.

	Blast from the Past
	Find the HEV Suit Charger faceplate in Eli's scrap yard.

When you enter the scrap yard, look to your left and high to see a ledge two barrels on it. Get up there by stacking boxes with the gravity gun. Once up there, you will see a yellow metal plate which you MUST pick up with the Gravity Gun for the achievement to unlock. You'll get this on Black Mesa.

	Two Points
	Use DOG's ball to make a basket in Eli's scrapyard.

In the scrap yard Eli calls DOG to play catch with you. When it throws the ball, use the gravity gun to grab it and throw it in the hoop on the left side of the area. I found it easier to stand about 15 feet directly in front of the hoop. The achievement will unlock as soon as you make a hoop. You'll get this on Black Mesa.

	Bone Breaker
	Kill 30 enemies with thrown physics objects.

Ravenholm is the best level for this. Grap anything with the gravity gun and shoot it at enemies to kill them. The saw blades are very handy here.

	Hallowed Ground (Secret achievement)
	Escort Gregori safely through the church cemetery.

This is story related so you will earn this automatically on Ravenholm.

	Zombie Chopper
	Play through Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun.

This could be challenging depending on what difficulty you're playing on. Its best to play on Easy. You MUST use only the Gravity Gun. Use lots of saw blades, bricks, barrels, or anything you can find to throw. If you equip any weapon and pull the right trigger you will not get this achievement. It doesn't matter if you didn't hit an enemy. Don't use the crowbar to break boxes - use the gravity gun. Its safe to use your torch. Also, if you get cornered don't even try to use another weapon to defend yourself. Just die and respawn. This is really not as hard as it might appear.

	Hot PotatOwned
	Kill a Combine soldier with his own grenade.

At the beginning of the chapter Highway 17, you have to take out two snipers. After that you'll encounter a few guys and one of them will throw a grenade at you. Grab it and throw it back and you'll get the achievement if it kills him.

	Where Cubbage Fears to Thread (Secret achievement)
	Defend Little Odessa from the gunship attack.

This is story related so you will earn this automatically in Highway 17.

	OSHA Violation
	Kill 3 enemies using the crane.

In Highway 17, you will come to an area where you need to use the crane to lift your vehicle to higher ground. When you enter the crane a few guys will spawn. When that happens, use the crane to grab those shipping containers and drop it on them. Swinging the containers into them will work too.

	Targetted Advertising
	Pin a soldier to the billboard in chapter Highway 17

In the chapter Highway 17, you'll be travelling on the highway and will eventually come to a point where you have to drive over a big rock mound. Over the mound and around the corner you will come to a point in the road where a tanker semi and a few cars block the road. To the right of that is a hill with a tree. Head up the hill and pick up the crossbow and shoot at the guy on the billboard sign ahead of you.

	Keep Off the Sand!
	Cross the antlion beach in chapter Sandtraps without touching the sand.

This can be a pain but fortunately you don't have to keep of the sand for the entire level. Simple use the gravity gun to grab items from your surroundings to make a path for you to step on while moving forward. Make sure to do lots of manual saves. If you step on the sand do not load the autosave, intead use your manual save. Anyways, you will eventually get to a hill and if you were successful, the achievement will unlock. Note: just past this hill is where you will face a big antlion.

	Bug Hunt
	Use the antlions to kill 50 enemies.

Once you defeated the previously mentioned antlion, you will be given a "thingy" for the lack of a better word, that will allow you to command antlions. Use this ability through the remaining of this level and you should accomplish this before the end of Sandtraps.

	One Man Army
	Destroy six gunships in Half-Life 2.

At the ending part of Sandtraps you will have to defeat two gunships. Note: prior to this, you should have destroyed four gunships up to this point in the game. Destroy the two here to give to a total of six and the achievement is yours.

	Flushed
	Kill an enemy with a toilet.

As you're moving through the prison in Nova Prospekt, just grab a toilet with the gravity gun and throw it at a soldier to kill him and it will unlock.

	Hack Attack!
	Kill five enemies with a Manhack.

To get this you must the gravity gun to grab the little flying bots and throw them toward a soldier to kill them. You should be able to get five on them on Nova Prospekt. If not, you can get them on the next chapter - Entanglement.

	Warden Freeman
	Survive the second turret standoff in Nova Prospekt.

In Nova Prospekt, I destroyed all of the turrets. However, this achievement will not unlock until you get to a certain part in next chapter, Entanglement. The part I'm referring to is where you have to use the turrets to help battle a large group of soldiers. Once you've defeated the soldiers, Alyx will join you and the achievement will unlock.

	Follow Freeman
	Gain command of a squad of rebels in the uprising.

This is story related and will unlock in the chapter Anticitizen One.

	Deadly Harvest
	Kill an enemy by planting a hopper mine.

Your first encounter with Hopper Mines will be in the chapter Anticitizen One. Simply grab one and place it near a soldier. When they step into it the achievement will unlock..

	"Radiation Levels Detected"
	Get through the toxic tunnel under City 17 in Half-Life 2.

This story related achievement will unlock in the chapter Anticitizen One.

	Plaza Defender
	Survive the generator plaza standoff in chapter Anticitizen One.

Story related so you can't miss this.

	Counter-Sniper
	Kill all of the snipers in City 17.

You get this at the very beginning of the chapter, Follow Freeman. There are a total of 5 snipers. There are two that MUST be killed from the ground level. One is directly ahead of you and the other to the street on the right. If you skip the one on the right he won't be there if you come back later according to my experience. It will be a long lob with the granade but you can get him. The third one is found when you move up one floor and the other two when you move up to the top floor.

	Think Fast!
	Kill an Elite Soldier with his own energy ball.

Further along in the Follow Freeman chapter, you will come across an Elite Soldier (they're dressed in white) who will throw an energy ball at you. Grab it with the gravity gun and throw it back at HIM.

	Fight the Power
	Shut down the supression device by disabling its generators.

Story related and will you get in the Follow Freeman chapter.

	Lambda Locator
	Find all lambda caches in Half-Life 2.

There are a total of 45 and you will get the last one in the Follow Freeman chapter. Go here for a guide on where they are. However, even with the guide some might be challenging to locate.

	Giant Killer
	Survive the rooftop strider battle in the ruins of City 17.

This is story related so you can't miss it. You get this in Follow Freeman.

	Conservationist
	Kill five enemies with the same energy ball.

This can be tricky and may take some practice. You'll need to grab an energy ball floating in a generator and throw it at an enemy. The trick is to throw and quicky grab, throw and grab. The location will also help. I got mine in a long hallway shortly after the beginning of the Our Benefactors chapter.

	Atomizer
	Disintegrate 15 soldiers by throwing them into a Combine ball field.

This is much easier and you probably get this before Conservationist. Just grab soldiers and throw them into the power things.

	Singularity Collapse (Secret achievement)
	Destroy the Citadel's reactor core.

This is story releated so you can't miss this.
